The History of Lindsay House

Lindsay House is an Armidale treasure. It has been refurbished to bring a modern touch to this beautiful piece of local history. Lindsay House is located close to Armidale’s CBD where it overlooks the landmark, Central Park.

The residence on the corner of Barney and Faulkner St was once the home and business practice of Dr. Walter Eli Harris, whom the building was built for in 1920. Dr. Harris was born in Sydney in 1876 and was educated at Sydney Grammar School before attending the University of Sydney, graduating in medicine with a Master of Surgery. Dr. Harris moved to Armidale with his family to open his own practice of which he ran from the house.

The home was later purchased by the Armidale Teachers’ College in 1972 and used as a student residence. Edith Dulcie Lindsay was a long serving staff member of the College and so it was named in honor of her and, her service to teacher education. In 1999 the property was purchased privately and converted into a country hotel and restaurant.

In 2014 Lindsay House was purchased by Pam and Harley who have restored the house to its original beauty while still adding a contemporary touch to the ‘old world charm’.

Rooms are furnished with quality beds, linen and unique antiques. Coffee / tea and a fridge in the sunroom are provided for all guests to use during their stay.

Lindsay House is also available for wedding ceremonies or elopements.

Lindsay House has been a guest house for many years with guests enjoying the “old world” atmosphere, along with everything else the City of Armidale has to offer. Armidale (‘the city of four seasons’) offers national parks, waterfalls, world renowned education facilities, the arts, wineries, breweries, cafes and pubs.
